Robinson, Grace - 2nd. March 1910 - Of William Street - Summoned John Andrew Couser of Mill Street for assault on that date.
In a crosscase John Andrew Couser charged Grace Robinson with using abusive and threatening language on same date.
Robinson, William - 2nd. March 1910 - Employed by the Mercer Bread Co. was charged Sgt. M.McLaughlin with unlawfully and cruelly treating a horse. Sgt. McLaughlin deposed that he saw the defendant driving a horse through Conway Square on that date, defendant with the butt end of a whip struck the horse on the back several times. but the horse did not go any quicker. He questioned the driver and on examining the horse found that it had 2 raw sores on the right shoulder and one under the straddle on the left side. The straddle was in contact with the sore. The horse was also lame in the left leg which was greatly swollen. Witness later interviewed the manager of the company and afterwards got a veterinary certificate from Mr.Redding V.S.
Constable Tarpey corroborated: "There was matter on the straddle and his hind leg was swollen as big as ..................
Mr. Alexander Stewart defending: "His body i suppose"
Constable Tarpey: "I might say so as the body wasn't very big {laughter}
James A. Patterson said that in his opinion the horse was not fit for work. The leg was swollen two or three times the natural size and there was a red and raw sore the size of a half crown under the straddle.
David Kielty yardman deposed that the manager had ordered that the horse be given a little exercise. He saw the horse on the morning of 2nd. March and the sore under the straddle was apparently healed.
T.B.Redding V.S. gave evidence that he examined the horse on the evening of 2nd. March. There was a dry scab on the shoulder and under the straddle there were two small red patches which were dry and natural. There was no indication of rawness. The horse suffered from a thick leg for some time. If witness had a horse similarly afflicted he would think nothing of putting harness on it.
To Sgt. McLaughlin: The sores he saw were dry and healed. It would be possible to dry up a sore to look healed but there would be indications of medicine used. He would not say the horse was fit for work but exercise was the proper thing for it.
Chairman: The defendant stands convicted and is fined 5 shillings and costs.
