From the Newtownards Chronicle -
"You retire too young here" In Northern Ireland we do more for our older people but everyone her retires too young ... This is the opinion of Mrs. William Watson "Mary Catherine McClement" formerly of Newtownards but now Philladelphia USA, who was pictured on her 1st.visit home for 35 years ... "When i first went to America i used to see these very old people, some over 80 years old going to their employment early in the morning" she said. But Mrs. Watson said the British Welfare State is much better than the system for elderly people in America. "What you do for them here, as well as the fact that most of my relatives live in Ulster, would be one of my reasons for liking to live here ..." she said. Mrs. Watson and her late husband William were both from Northern Ireland. Born in Glastry, Mary McClements as she was then, along with the eleven members of her family then moved to Newtownards, and nearly up to the time of her marriage lived on William Street. Her husband who was born in Greenwell Street was a house painter and paper hanger, serving his time with Bob Foster. On 9th. April 1917 they were married at Helens Bay and their first home was at 60 South Street where they stayed for three years and there Sadie was born. They left South Street and for the next eight years prior to their departure to America in 1923 they were caretakers for the Masonic Hall in Regent Street. During this time their second child Betty was born. After 11 years of marriage they uprooted themselves and together with their two children set out on the great adventure. When they arrived in Philladelphia for the first few weeks they stayed with Mr.J.Watson a brother before moving into a house of their own. Until his death in 1940 Mr.Watson had worked as a painter and paper hanger, the same job he had in Newtownards. Now his wife Mary is back and would like to stay here permanently. "If my children and family were in Northern Ireland i could settle down here nicely" she said. Since she arrived on 11th.July Mrs.Watson had noticed big changes in Newtownards and its people,. "I think they are very comfortable here with their beautiful new homes and are just as upto-date as those in America,. There are trees in Frances Street, those were not there when i left, but it is much better now" she commented. "Life in America can be good but for the emigrant something is always missing, i never could say i was really homesick, people are very nice and i have made friends out in the States - but my heart warms for the old Ards" Her daughter Sadie now has two girls and Betty has four sons all living in Philladelphia. Mrs. Watson said that Sadie and her husband had visited Ulster about three years ago and would like to live here too,. Sadies husband though and American would like to open a business her. A "Chronicle" reporter talked to Mrs.Watson at the home of her sister Mrs. M.Ritchie of 25 Wallaces Street No.1, where she has been staying for a few days. Also living with Mrs. Ritchie are her daughter and son-in-law Mr.and Mrs. Herbert Leitch Mrs. Watson has also visited her brother Mr.James McClements of 13 James Street and sister-in-laws Mrs.M.Byers and Mrs.Jean Watson both of 4 North Street and Mrs.W.Wilson of 49 Victoria Avenue. Out in America Mrs.Watson has a sister-in-law Mrs.Jack McWilliams of Philladelphia and a brother Mr.T.McClements in Pittsburg. |
