Hi Derek,
I was excited when I saw your web site after doing a google search for a long ago cousin
named John Burrows who I was able to determine owned a
cycle shop in Newtownards on North Street (from the 1910 Newtownards City Directory). I
was taken by the first vintage picture on your web
site that noted that John Burrows Cycle shop was shown on the corner
along North Street. John Burrows was the son of Hugh Burrows (1843-July
31, 1923) and Agnes Warden (1845 - July 3 1919). Hugh and Agnes lived at 37 North
Street and are buried at the old cemetery in Grey Abbey. John's
father Hugh was the younger brother of my Great Grandfather William John Burrows who was a
farmer at Ballyeurie near Newtownards. Hugh Burrows
was listed as a carpenter as well as a Publican in the 1911 Census. I have a cousin
also named John Burrows who lives on the "Burrows" family
farm land near Mount Stewart. My Cousin John indicated that Hugh Burrows owned a pub on
North Street named the Railway Bar that still exists on
North Street. Hugh Burrows was also a contractor who built the Grey Abbey Presbyterian
Church as well as the Dundonald School. John Burrows would
have been a grandson of my Great Great Grandfather who was also named John Burrows.
This would make me John Burrows' first cousin twice
removed.
Sorry to bore you with family details but it was exciting to see
your posted picture that showed the John Burrows Cycle Shop which I assume is
on the right corner. Any other details you might have on the John Burrows Cycle Shop would
be greatly appreciated.
Also my Great Uncle Hugh McCartney (my Grandmother's older brother) was the
Newtownards Town Clerk from 1900 to 1931. My wife Linda and I plan
to visit Newtownards in the last week of April and the first week of May to meet a number
of our cousins.
Thanks again for saving a piece of history.
Best wishes,
Robert Burrows
