Patton, Samuel Forbes - 6th. September 1914 - Joined N.Z.E.F. at Epsom Camp Auckland -  - Gave as present employer William Patton of Ulster St. Hamilton New Zealand - Previously spent 2 years with the Irish Volunteers - Having been discharged after injury he left Malta on the hospital ship "Ascanius" and was transferred to the hospital ship "Dover Castle" on 31st. August 1915 after which he arrived at the Second Western General Hospital in Manchester on 12th. October 1915 - He was lucky to have made it to Manchester as the following report confirms "The S.S. Dover Castle was torpedoed by the German U-boat UC-67 on 26 May 1917, while 50 miles (80 km) north of Bône on passage from Malta to Gibraltar. The initial explosion killed seven boiler stokers but the crew was able to evacuate the wounded onto HMS Cameleon. The captain and a small crew tried to save the ship but she was hit by a second torpedo an hour later, and sank in three minutes."    S.S.
