Promoted to be Sergeant for conspicuous bravery in the field on 30th September 1915, and is commended by General H. Watts. He is also commended by General Gough for gallantry in the field on the 18th and 20th May, 1915.

13th. October 1915 - He was awarded a 2nd. parchment certificate.
2nd.April 1917 - Col.Sgt.Major Robert Rankin of the 1st.South Staffs. was promoted to a commission as 2nd.Lieutenant in the 2nd.Staffs.for gallantry in the field and just prior to this was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery in action.
He had only got his commission a few days when by conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty he was awarded the Military Cross. He was the son of James Rankin of Movilla Street

For  NEWCASTLE  and  PHILADELPHIA,
THE New Ship INDEPENDENCE,  Alexander Osburn, Master,  350 tons burthen, now at Port Glasgow, is expected
in this harbour the latter end of this month, and well fitted out, to sail for the above places at the end of August next. -- This vessel is remarkably high between decks, with air ports, sails exceedingly fast and the Captain is well acquainted in the passenger trade. -- Strict attention will be paid to the quality of the provisions, to have the Ship well stored for the voyage, so as to render the passage agreeable.
Those passengers, or servants, who wish to embrace this favourable opportunity of removing to either of the above places, are requested to
apply immediately to the owners, Samuel Brown and John Cunningham, Belfast; or Mr. Michael Ranken, Newtown-Ards.
