flag-usa.gif (10636 bytes) Mateer, Herbert - 25th. February 1952 aged 28 - {b.c1924} - Husband of Jane - Arrived at Niagra Falls, New York USA

Email received November 2010
My family of McTear's originate from Newtownards as do my Grandmothers family of McLennaghans, since leaving Newtownards in the 1850's these two families are still together today in both Lanark in Scotland and in Hamilton in Ontario.
My great grandfather William McTear left Newtownards in 1856 with his first wife Margaret McClements and two children and settled in Saltcoats in Ayrshire in Scotland.  Margaret and the older child Mary died there in 1857.
In 1859 William married my Great Grandmother Agnes Cairns. They had seven children in Saltcoats before moving to Bridgeton in Glasgow where they had another four children.
The first of the children born in Glasgow was George McTear born at 24 Brown Street in Bridgeton on the 1st of June 1874.
George McTear married Ellen McCormick who was also from Newtownards on 11th of November 1892 in Bridgeton in Glasgow
They had a daughter born on the 5th of July 1892 at 68 Mordaunt Street in Bridgeton and named her Jeanie McTear.
On the 1st of April 1894 in Bridgeton they had another daughter they named Christina.
On the 15th of November twin sons were born to George and Ellen. They named the twins George McTear and William Beattie McTear.
It was after this that tragedy struck the family and by mid 1897 Ellen, Christina and the twins boys had all died leaving George to bring up Jeanie on his own.
George found it hard to cope and Jeanie was brought up by her Aunt Margaret and after she married James Baxter Norris in Glasgow on the 25th of April 1925  they emigrated to Boston in the USA where Jeanie's descendants live today. Jeanie herself died in 1985 aged 93 years.
Ellen McCormick's parents from Newtownards were Thomas McCormick and Jane Beattie born c1855.
